501: Introduction to Information Science and Technology

In the Introduction to Information Science and Technology, the basics of subjects such as using the internet effectively, understanding metadata and a topics related to using technology.  The following competencies are covered in the 501: Introduction to Information Science and Technology.

4A. Information, communication, assistive, and related technologies as they affect the resources, service delivery, and uses of libraries and other information agencies.
4B. The application of information, communication, assistive, and related technology and tools consistent with professional ethics and prevailing service norms and applications.
4C. The methods of assessing and evaluating the specifications, efficacy, and cost efficiency of technology-based products and services.
4D. The principles and techniques necessary to identify and analyze emerging technologies and innovations in order to recognize and implement relevant technological improvements.

Assignments
Web Search Exercise– This exercised was placed to the class as an exercise in refining search results to get results that are more likely to be the information that a patron is looking for.  It also gave the opportunity to better use different search engines.
XML Exercise– Using XML for developing web pages is another important skill this class touched on.  This exercise focused on writing XML for a webpage, as well as translating HTML into XML code.  
Metadata Slideshow– This was half of the final project done with a larger group.  For the class, each student had to pick an aspect that was studied in the course and (essentially) present the subject to the class.  My group decided to present the subject of metadata.
Metadata Paper-This was the second half of the final project.  This paper was written by the group in coordination with the slideshow project.
