503: Foundations of Librarianship

In Foundations of Librarianship, topics relating to librarians and librarianship were covered.  Subjects such as librarian ethics, history of libraries and communicating with patrons.  The 503: Foundations of Librarianship course covers the following ALA competencies through papers, discussions and major projects.

1A. The ethics, values, and foundational principles of the library and information profession.
1B. The role of library and information professionals in the promotion of democratic principles and intellectual freedom (including freedom of expression, thought, and conscience).
1C. The history of libraries and librarianship.
1D. The history of human communication and its impact on libraries.
1E. Current types of library (school, public, academic, special, etc.) and closely related information agencies.
1F. National and international social, public, information, economic, and cultural policies and trends of significance to the library and information profession.\
1G. The legal framework within which libraries and information agencies operate. That framework includes laws relating to copyright, privacy, freedom of expression, equal rights (e.g., the Americans with Disabilities Act), and intellectual property.
1H. The importance of effective advocacy for libraries, librarians, other library workers, and library services.
1I. The techniques used to analyze complex problems and create appropriate solutions.
1J. Effective communication techniques (verbal and written).
1K. Certification and/or licensure requirements of specialized areas of the profession.

Assignments
Library Purpose as a Function of Audience
– Paper comparing and contrasting the current types of information agencies and their purposes.
Technology and Literacy– Paper describing key events issues and trends in library history, including the imp ace of the history of communication on libraries.
Protecting Patron Privacy– Paper describing the legal framework (copyright, privacy, freedom of expression, equal rights, intellectual property) within which libraries operate.
For the Love of Libraries– Discusses the ALA Code of Ethics in terms of services, patrons, co-workers, ad professional staff; and the role of the LIS profession in promoting intellectual freedom and free access to information.
Something to Offend Everyone– Paper describing and illustrating the importance of effective advocacy for libraries.
Lifelong Learning– Paper discussing the role of the library in the lifelong learning of patrons, including an understanding of lifelong learning in the provision of quality service and the promotion of library services.
Book Project– This project was designed to illustrate historical changes of librarians and library services over the decades.  The project I made showed the “Evolution of the Librarian” by showing different types of librarians and their purposes in society.  The pamphlet was designed to fold open so the librarian displayed stood taller and straighter than the one before in an ‘evolution’ of knowledge.
Expansion on Final Project– This final project was to design a library service.  The project I designed was to provide a home delivery service for library materials catering to hospitals and various rehabilitation centers.  Below are the graphics used for the project.
