After many classes and completion of the final paper, I decided one of the best learning experiences would be for me to participate in an internship. This seemed like a good choice because (while I was working part-time during classes) I figured the internship would be beneficial both in giving me different experiences and seeing how the policies are different at a different library. I chose the public library in my hometown of Westbrook, Connecticut. The library is much smaller than the one I was employed at and offered different services and programs.
After discussing things with Mr. Daniels, we agreed that one of the ways I would spend my internship would be to help make Westbrook Public Library more technologically friendly. The library was previously not seen by the residents as an area where they can bring their technology to have a librarian explain it to them. My goal was to instigate a few initiatives to help make the library more technology-friendly by providing one-to-one lessons and larger group classes, in conjunction with another librarian.
Additionally, this internship gave me more experience in subjects that I was not able to participate in on the job. Some of these subjects included program advertising, light cataloging and preparing books for the statewide Inter-Library Loan System based in Connecticut. I feel the experiences here gave me a well-rounded education and a better understanding of the administrative and technical resources that a librarian has to maintain.
